The question is why is this the case?
When I began djing back in 1991 we were in a bit of a recession and people were cutting back on extravagant weddings. The brides would cut back on full service dinners and go buffet instead. They would trim back on their head count or purchase less flower arrangements. However, the first thing that brides are cutting today are things that can easily be duplicated. Well, so they think. Music is so easily attainable nowadays that it seems easy to download a bunch of songs and cut out the DJ. In the past, brides would never cut the DJ from their wedding list. But that certainly is not the case today.
The DJ offers something that an iPod cannot offer other than music. Someone has to actually set up the pa system and amplification. That means that you'll have to go around asking your cousins and uncles if they wouldn't mind volunteering for this task. If they do and if you find someone who is a musician or they themselves a DJ then you are in luck.
Then consider the fact that while at the wedding or party no one is ever happy with the music playing. Believe me, I've done hundreds of events and everyone always fights over the music. So the question is: Who's going to be the mediator that will pacify everyone and actually change the music.
My third and final point is that the DJ serve as a Master of Ceremonies. He is properly dressed in whatever you want him to wear. I've seen DJs dressed in a Hawaiin Tropical shirt and shorts djing a wedding. He will announce the important events of the wedding (ie. first dance, cake cutting) in whatever style you want. Again the announcement styl can range from a Michael Buffer ("Let's Get Ready To Rumble..") to a low key and soft spoken wedding DJ. He also serves as your coordinator unless you happen to hire a wedding coordinator.

After a while DJs start to look the same and sound the same. They must go to a special mandatory DJ training where someone teaches them to grow a goatee and have a cheezy personality on the microphone.

With all those people eating and enjoying the party, the size of the banquet halls needed to accommodate these weddings. Big weddings equal bigger budgets, there is just no way around it.
